Short papers, including poster presentations, based on presentations made at
the Western Society for Kinesiology and Wellness conference, are now being
accepted for publication in this year’s Western Society Review. The Western
Society Review is published each year at the time of the annual WSKW Conference.
Unless otherwise noted, manuscripts should follow guidelines provided in the
Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed).
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: July 31st, 2009

The following should be noted: 1) the submitted manuscript is an extension of the presentation made at the WSKW Conference the previous year, and 2) the formats differ depending on the type of presentation (each author should choose the format appropriate to their paper topic).

GENERAL FORMAT
Each paper should NOT exceed two (2) pages in length. All titles, content, and graphics are prepared in Times New Roman, in font sizes detailed in the explanations, and left justified. Margins must be set at one (1) inch on all sides. Subheadings are indicated for each type of paper in the specific examples noted below.

• The title is written in 18 point, Times New Roman, ALL CAPS, and left justified.
(Note: The title may be the same as the one used in the Conference Program, or it may be a new but related title.)

 • Under the title, on the next line, (10 point, Times New Roman, left justified) is a listing of the authorship name(s), using the initials and last name only, then a comma, and then the university for each author (spelled out completely).

(Note: For multiple authors – list them in order of contribution, or alphabetically (One exception to this rule is when an author serves as a mentor, and it is agreed by the authorship team to assume the status position of last author.)

 • The next line includes the date submitted – Month, day, year (10 point, Times New Roman, left justified).

(Note: See details under the Data Based/Research Format guidelines below.)
Each paper should include at least one figure, table, photo, or drawing to help readers better understand the content of the paper (hereafter referred to as figure/table). That figure/table should be referenced in the text prior to its presentation in the body of the article. Under the figure/table is a caption that includes a short explanation expressed in complete sentences and punctuated accordingly.

Citations are included where appropriate in the paper and references are included at the end. The Reference section consists of at least two pieces of literature used to support the content of the paper. Each entry must be cited (used) in the paper. Use the APA format with the exception that references are single spaced and a second line is indented four (4) spaces.   Types of papers include 1) Data Based/Research, 2) Project Based, 3) Panel or Round Table Discussion, 4) Address-to-the-Body, and 5) Keynote Address. Each is explained in more detail below.

SUBMISSION OF THE MANUSCRIPT
When the manuscript is ready for publication, send it using e-mail as an attachment in Microsoft Word. The document will be opened on a PC.

Some editing may be necessary to ensure consistent formatting congruity prior to publication. Manuscripts longer than two pages will be returned for further editing. In the case of late documents that are too long, when accepted, the editor(s) will make decisions to shorten the document, adjust format, and otherwise prepare it to meet publication deadlines. The e-mail address is: Cathy Inouye – cathy.inouye@csueastbay.edu

DATA BASED/RESEARCH FORMAT
Selection of this format for your paper is predicated on the collection of data. If data are not collected, analyzed, and discussed in your paper, please do not select this format.

Spacing between sub title sections consists of one double space. The subtitles used for the Data Based/Research manuscript include 1) Problem, 2) Methods, 3) Analysis, 4) Discussion/Conclusion, and 5) References.

An example of the spacing and the format for the Data Based/Research Format is shown below:

TITLE (18 pt. Times New Roman, ALL CAPS, bold, left justified)
Initial and Last Name, University (e.g., J. N. Doe, Alaska University; 10 pt., Times New Roman, left justified)
Date (e.g., March 1, 2000; 10 pt., Times New Roman, left justified)

PROBLEM (12 pt., Times New Roman, ALL CAPS, bold, left justified)
This section of the paper describes the problem or question being researched. The font should be 12 pt., Times New Roman, and justified to the left.

METHODS (12 pt., Times New Roman, ALL CAPS, bold, left justified)
This section discusses the methods used to research the problem. The font should be size 12 pt., Times New Roman, and justified to the left.

ANALYSIS (12 pt., Times New Roman, ALL CAPS, bold, left justified)
This section elaborates on the analysis techniques used during research, all data/observations obtained using the methods. A graphic (e.g., figure/table) should be placed in this section to accompany and illustrate your findings, and is referred to within the manuscript like the reference to the table which follows (see Table 1).  An appropriate title and caption should accompany each figure used.  The font should be size 12 pt., Times New Roman.

DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION (12 pt., Times New Roman, ALL CAPS, bold, left justified)
Data and observations are drawn together to form conclusions related to the problem. The font should be size 12 pt., Times New Roman, and justified to the left.

REFERENCES (12 pt., Times New Roman, ALL CAPS, bold, left justified)
A list of your sources/references should be placed under this heading. The text should be size 10 pt., Times New Roman, and justified to the left, using a hanging indent of four spaces as demonstrated in this hypothetical example.

Money, G. (1999). Why physical activity is the coolest thing since sliced bread. Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 30: 52-72. Harvey, M.K. (1984). Regression analysis on physical activity scores and fitness characteristics in 5-6-7 year old
children. Perceptual and Motor Skills, 27: 347-349.

PROJECT BASED FORMAT
Selection of this format for your paper is based on a professional project which you feel warrants explanation to other professionals.  The project could be something that has been completed, or is planned for the future. A theoretical position could be stated. If your paper includes data collection, or is about a discussion between professionals concerning a topic and its’ place in the profession, please do not select this format for your manuscript.

The sub headers to be used in the paper are 1) Project, 2) Means, 3) Outcome, 4) Reflection, and 5) References. (Note: See details under the Data Based/Research Format guidelines above.)

PANEL AND ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION REPORT FORMAT
Selection of this format for your paper is based on a report of a discussion between professionals in which exchange and give-and-take define the overall position. The report may reflect many, if not all of the main ideas discussed as a part of the topic. If your paper includes data collection, or explanation of, or information about a project, please do not select this format for your manuscript.

The sub headers to be used in the paper are 1) Topic Introduction, 2) Discussion of Concepts, 3) Overall Position/Summary, 4) Reflection, and 5) References. (Note: See details under the Data Based/Research Format guidelines above.)

ADDRESS-TO-THE-BODY FORMAT
Selection of this format for your paper is predicated on addressing main concerns shared by the WSKW membership in the form of a position statement or call to action. Sometimes, these addresses are simple calls-to-action, or a call for a sub-discipline to move in a new direction. They can be made by a single member of the organization who presented the content at the WSKW Conference the previous year or by a group of author/presenters.

The sub headers to be used in the paper are 1) Position Statement, 2) Lines of Logic, 3) Call to Action/New Direction, 4) Expected Consequence, and 5) References. (Note: See details under the Data Based/Research Format guidelines above.)

KEYNOTE ADDRESS
This format example is selected only if your paper was the Keynote Address at the WSKW Annual Conference. The Keynote Address paper can be as long as six (6) single spaced pages with figure/tables and references. (Note: See details under the Data Based/Research Format guidelines above.)
