FORMAT
CHOICES FOR PRESENTATION AT 54th
CONFERENCE
Historically, the ethos for
the WSKW conference has been represented by
the phrase “where the conferee is the
program and mentoring and networking are the
foundation.”
This philosophy has stood the test of time
for over 50 years. A few additions have
been added in recent years providing a
variety of opportunities for conferees to
engage with their peers. These options are
listed below. There are further details
provided on the organization’s new website
at
www.WSKW.net.
1)
Presentation/Discussion Format:
This format is available in
two design paradigms. The purpose of the
Open Forum is to allow conferees to join a
group of professionals to discuss pertinent
topics. The two paradigms are:
a)
Round Table
– Topic – Concept – Positions – Discussion –
Reflection
b)
Panel
– Topic – Concept – Positions – Discussion –
Reflection
See the website for
additional criteria and format guidelines.
Questions and Submissions for these or other
options may be directed to Rob Thomas
at
rthomas@LaSierra.edu.

2) Peavy
Student Papers:
Robert D. Peavy, Faculty Emeriti of
Washington State University, instituted the
“Peavy Student Papers” for Western Society
as a forum for students to present refereed
research at Western Society. Undergraduate
students are encouraged to present a poster
of either original works or reviews of
another author’s research at the Conference.
Dr. Peavy regularly attends Western Society
– it is a great place for young researchers
to discuss their work. This year there are
three submission categories based on the
author’s writing proficiency or experience.
Further details can be found online at
www.WSKW.net at the Peavy Papers Call
for Abstracts link. All questions and R.D.
Peavy Paper submissions should be directed
to Wes McDaniel at
PVPapers@hotmail.com.
3) Scientific
Papers: Papers on
any topic within a field of study supported
by WSKW are eligible for acceptance for
poster or oral presentations.
Criteria for abstracts are found on the WSKW
website. Questions and Submissions for these
options may be directed to Rob Thomas
at
rthomas@LaSierra.edu.
4) Response
Paper to the “Hot Topic” of the Conference:
The Hot Topic for
the 2009 conference is
“Is ‘screen time’
the enemy? Or can it be used for
good?” In the era of rapidly
increasing levels of obesity, physical
inactivity, diabetes and related
health-outcomes it is imperative for our
profession to respond in a strong and clear
manner. Do television, computers,
electronic gaming, and other screen-related
activities always produce negative
outcomes? What positive alternatives can
our profession suggest, provide, and support
to counter this alarming trend?
Criteria for writing the Hot
Topic Response Paper may be found on the
WSKW website. Questions and Responses for
the Hot Topic may be directed to Rob
Thomas at
rthomas@LaSierra.edu.
5) Dr.
G. Arthur Broten Young Scholars Recognition
Program: The Dr.
G. Arthur Broten Young Scholars Recognition
Program provides opportunities for physical
educators to present professional papers
focusing specifically on issues facing
physical education. Eligibility, selection
criteria, submission deadline, and other
pertinent information may be found online at
www.WSKW.net. You may ask questions or
submit your materials to Craig G. Johnson,
Editor, Monograph Series, at
cjohnson@stmarys-ca.edu.
6) Western
Society Review:
Presenters from last year’s 2008 conference
are able to submit their papers
for publication in this year’s Western
Society Review. The Western Society Review
is published each year at the time of the
annual WSKW Conference. The criteria and
formats for each type of submission is
provided on the website. For Questions or
Submissions, contact Cathy Inouye at
cathy.inouye@csueastbay.edu.
