Western Society for  Kinesiology & Wellness

Format Choices for 2010 Proposals and Papers

WSKW supports a variety of professional presentation interests. The theme for the 2010 conference is Tomorrow's Kinesiology & Wellness Professional. Topic ideas to support this theme include the following:

  • Best or new practices in pedagogical methods
  • Trends for future research and publishing
  • Use of technology in physical education
  • Changes in the fitness industry
  • Health-related concerns and trends in society
  • Online tools for teaching
  • Changes in higher education
  • Direction of WSKW
  • New fitness equipment
  • Retail and commercial applications of recreation and sport
  • Promotion of wellness and physical education
  • Assessment expectations in the future

Proposals and papers on any topic related to kinesiology and wellness are welcome. The following are ways to participate in the 2010 WSKW conference:

CONFERENCE ORAL PRESENTATIONS

Discussion Format: The format of open discussion is that foundation by which WSKW conferences were built. The purpose of the open forum is to allow conferees to join a group of professionals to discuss pertinent topics. Submit proposals online at www.WSreno.com

  • Round Table: A moderator briefly presents the issue and open discussion immediately follows. This is THE traditional format from which WSKW sessions were built.
  • Panel: A selection of panelists with expertise or insight on a topic procede as follows: Topic – Concept – Positions – Discussion – Reflection
  • Hot Topic:A hot topic in kinesiology or wellness can be presented in either a Round Table, Panel format or as a single presentation. Usually position papers are submitted for a hot topic to be published in the Western Society Review, and then defended during the hot topic presentation. This year's hot topic: “Are Universities Effectively Preparing Students for the Profession?”

Facilitators are selected for their ability to assist in making discussions run smoothly. They are to provide opportunities for everyone to speak, eliminate obstacles, and help the group to stay on task. Facilitators should not be selected for their technical expertise in a specific professional area. The following outline is offered as a guide for facilitators:

  1. Define and delimit the topic for discussion.
  2. Encourage participation.
  3. Give the floor to each speaker.
  4. Keep track of requests to speak and acknowledge pending requests in order. If there is a choice between speakers, give preference to the person who has not spoken. Do not penalize those who speak more than others. Do not make judgments based on personality. Clarify or question, but do not involve yourself in the discussion.
  5. Keep the discussion on the topic in a diplomatic way.
  6. Help the group develop reasonable alternatives.
  7. When you feel it is appropriate, move quickly to another subtopic.
  8. Resolve conflicts.
  9. Assist in bringing the discussion to a logical conclusion.
  10. Conclude the discussion session at an assigned time.

Scientific Paper Presentation: Research papers, projects, or other scholarly activities may be presented as an presentations, and subsequently submitted to the WSKW Review for publication the following year. Submit proposals for oral presentations here.

Young Scholar Presentation: The Dr. G. Arthur Broten Young Scholars Recognition Program provides opportunities for physical educators to present professional papers focusing specifically on issues facing physical education. Eligibility, selection criteria, submission deadline, and other pertinent information may be found online at www.WSKW.net. You may ask questions or submit materials to Craig G. Johnson, Editor, Monograph Series, at cjohnson@stmarys-ca.edu.

CONFERENCE POSTER PRESENTATIONS

Peavy Student Papers: The Peavy Papers provide a forum for students to present refereed research at Western Society. Undergraduate students are encouraged to present a poster of either original works or reviews of another author’s research. Robert D. Peavy is Professor Emeritus of Washington State University and he regularly attends Western Society. It is a great place for young researchers to discuss their work. See the flyer for more information.

Scientific Paper Poster: Research papers, projects, or other scholarly activities may be presented as a poster presentations. Submit proposals online at www.WSreno.com
